Renewable Design for Cylinder Candle Holder - Custom Made High Quality Caviar Jar with Cap – Linlang

For Beth Terry, the epiphany came when she read an article about how albatross chicks are being killed by discarded plastic. It was time to banish plastic from her life.

The farmhouse she shares with her husband, Jacob, feels like a 75-year-old time capsule. In addition to raising pigs and chickens for food, they make their own deodorant, lip balm and body moisturizer. And almost everything, like the hemp shower curtain she bought from Life Without Plastic, is made of natural materials in subdued colors with no branding. It’s domestic life before the plastic age.

Mary Carol gave me a piece of advice recently, which rings true in this season of love and friendship: Find low-maintenance friends and take good care of each other.

The “Extra Virgin Olive Oil” is in conspicuous gold that is prominent to the eye. By contrast, the sunflower oil disclosure is in black typeset that b lends into the dark green background and will be readily missed once the more ostentatious olive oil disclosure catches the hurried shopper’s eye

1. Fake Fish: Three months ago the New York State Attorney General’s Office released a scathing report on the high levels of seafood fraud found at supermarkets across the state (they DNA tested fish bought at 29 different chains and 155 locations). The findings got a lot of press, and New Yorkers were shocked, but they should not have been - this has been an extremely common and well documented problem nationwide for many years. It is called “species substitution,” and basically works like this: you go into a store and order a high-quality white fish that is expensive, like red snapper, which can cost $23 or more per pound. Because most white fish looks exactly the same once it is cleaned and trimmed into filets, stores (and restaurants) can sell you almost anything - and usually do. Instead of that $23 red snapper you might get tilefish, tilapia or some farmed Asian catfish you never heard of that costs more like $2 or $3 per pound. The seller pockets the difference. Guess what? With red snapper this happens more than nine out of ten times.

Grocery shopping has calibrated convenience at every turn, so it takes a bit of thinking to do things differently. The food co-op sells drawstring cotton bags, or you can bring your own containers. My first shop of the week includes a few essentials for a reduced plastic habit. There are Irish-made Lón an Lae paper lunch bags at €3.96 for 50. I mistakenly buy the extra large cotton bags and end up with a near-pillowcase-sized sack of porridge oats for €5.74. This provides enough breakfast for two weeks. Toilet rolls are sold separately here. They’re greyer than our supermarket brand and seem pricier, but actually there’s a lot more paper on each roll, the slimness of the “cheaper” versions is easier to hide when you’re selling them in plastic wrapped multipacks.

Yotam Ottolenghi is something of an accidental wellness guru. The Israeli-British chef, who is the author of six celebrated cookbooks (most recently “Simple”), has been championing vegetables at his quartet of London delis (as well as his restaurants, Nopi and Rovi) for close to two decades. Though by no means vegetarian, or consciously clean-and-green, these whitewashed lunchtime eateries serve up endlessly imaginative combinations of salads, grains and proteins laced with Middle Eastern flavor. Staples include courgette, squash and za’atar fritters and hawaij cauliflower with preserved lemon yogurt. Pile up your lunchtime takeaway box, and there’ll be fuel enough for dinner. Multiple locations, ottolenghi.co.uk.

Retronasal olfaction gives the taster a multi-dimensional taste experience — a whole-mouth appreciation of the product.
